The seven step process of instruction is a great reference material with regards to effective lesson planning however some of the steps are not suitable for online lesson planning. This is because, the interactive nature of the face to face classroom is different in the online environment. Therefore step 3 and 4 of the seven step process must be adjusted to fit the online environment. This paper on Online Course Planning by Nannette Johnson-Curiskin at Minnesota State University provides some good lesson planning ideas and examples for an online course. It is especially interesting to learn that group chats were made to be a lesson tasks and transcripts of these group chats are accepted for learning assessment. I hope to include group chats into my future online course lesson plans. In a self paced online course environment however, group chats may not be feasible or effective as a lesson task.
